I think the key to this whole thing we call life is creating happiness; happiness in the world, happiness in others – and most importantly, happiness in ourselves.

I’m not preaching here – I want to be as translucent as possible. There have been many bouts of unhappiness in my life, some warranted, others .. not so much. Regardless of what caused the dark cloud to move over my head, it was always the same thing that caused it to disappear.

We all create our own happiness.

Once I realized I could be as happy as I wanted to be, life became very simple. Cherish what you have and work towards what you don’t. It’s ok to be material, but know that it won’t keep you warm at night.

I think we all have the tendency to make more out of everything, but not the most out of everything.

We weren’t made perfect. We aren’t complete puzzles.

BUT that’s the beauty of it all. If the final product isn’t what you want it to be, CHANGE IT. Almost nothing is this life is irreversible.

I’m not going to pretend it’s easy — because I don’t have to pretend. Choose to be happy, or choose to be unhappy.

It’s that simple.

I’ve always strived to inspire and motivate you, my reader — but sometimes a story comes along that does a much better job than I ever could. Instead of trying to explain what a 18-year-old boy can teach you about life, I’ll let you watch it.

Soul Pancake created this video of Zach Sobiech, a young teenager who just recently died after a battle with cancer. If you take away one thing from watching this video, it should be that life is short. There’s no reason you shouldn’t be doing everything you can to leave a lasting impression.

Who can blame her for messing up this bad? I mean, even us Canadians have heard this anthem about 20 billion times. I did especially love the part however when she started to make up words like I do when I’m at the club.

“And the rab of the bee, and the hobe of the see!”

It could’ve been worse though:

I originally posted this on my blog after Michael Scott’s farewell episode on The Office. However, the sentiment still applies.

Today for the second time, I watched the last episode of “The Office” which stars Steve Carrell as the always funny Michael Scott. Leading up until I watched the episode, I knew it would bring tears to my eyes. Not only because it was the farewell of a great character in the series, but also the end of a chapter in my life.

It may sound absurd that I am relating a NBC comedy to a major part of my life – and yes it probably is. To me however; it’s real. I began watching The Office slightly before my leave from my employment at Future Shop. A few friends suggested I should start to watch it because of the similarity between my comedy and the comedy on the show. What began as a casual TV addiction slowly became one of my daily rituals.

You see, after my employment ended with Future Shop, I had a brief stint in unemployment. For about 3 months I sat in my dimly lit basement watching episode after episode of Michael Scott making an idiot of himself. Looking back, I probably could’ve spent that time more productively (like learning how to play an instrument or brushing up on my drawing skills). If I had done either of these though, I would’ve missed out a huge self-learning experience.

I believe that when you are down and looking up everything seems bigger (that’s what she said).

During that time, not only was I unemployed; but I was single. It had been a while since I’d met someone who I thought I could bear to stand over an hour with. This wasn’t due to the fact that I wasn’t searching, not even close. It was because I had witnessed one of the best relationships on TV between Pam Beasley and Jim Halpert. Most of you will probably find it crazy that I could create such a strong connection with a fictional couple, and maybe I am. Every episode that I watched, their relationship grew stronger and stronger, fighting through barriers that drew them apart. I witnessed every moment of their chronicled love up until the day that they got married.

I believe that when you are down and looking up everything seems bigger (that’s what she said). Every push, every shove can feel like it is the end of your world. The opposite is also true. More than anything, The Office and Jim & Pam’s relationship kept me moving on in hopes of finding happiness like they’d found. Their feelings for each other gave me reason to believe that somewhere out there, someone was waiting for me; waiting to found and to be loved. And do you know what? I found that someone.

Watching the employees say tearful goodbyes to their boss made me remember the emotions when I left my previous job. Cutting off ties from those co-workers that I had begun to think of as friends was one of the most painful experiences in my life. I always thought that if I ever did have to leave that job, I would retain those relationships. Unfortunately, like in many situations, that wasn’t the case.

I can only wish that I will be missed as much as Michael Scott. When it comes down to saying goodbye, most people show their true feelings. These emotions could’ve been hiding for years, but there’s something about farewells that cause them to just come out. I hope that when people are forced to say good-bye to me, they will have nothing but good things to say. That doesn’t mean that there isn’t bad things they could say, it just means that the good ones are just too overbearing.

What began as a simple addiction has turned into a life-altering experience. I have learned more than anything, we should all try to leave a memorable impression. An impression that can cause change in someone’s life for the better. An impression that will put a smile on someones face. Most important, an impression that will give hope for a brighter future. Thank you to a TV show that not only gave me something to do in the most dull phase of my life, but also for putting things into perspective. A perspective that shows my best days are yet to come.

You should never settle for who you are.

- Michael Scott

Incest prevention?

There’s an app for that.

It seems like there is an app for everything these days — but Iceland has taken it to a whole new level with the introduction of an incest prevention app” created by a group of students at the University of Iceland.

“The idea for the incest-prevention feature comes from our culture,” he said. “Accidentally sleeping with a relative has been a running joke in Icelandic culture for a while.”

This new app contains a large online genealogical database about the inhabitants of Iceland. Users can bump their phones together to find out whether or not they are related.

While this isn’t a problem in Canada or the United States, due to the country’s small size (320,000 residents), a large amount of Icelanders are related.

This market has resulted in 4,000 people have downloaded the app from the Google Play Store already.

It’s been 4 years since fan-favorite movie District 9 hit box offices. Fans have been begging for hints of a sequel since then and today, they got their wish.

The new trailer hit YouTube yesterday and outlines the plot of the new movie:

Set in the year 2159, where the very wealthy live on a man-made space station while the rest of the population resides on a ruined Earth, a man takes on a mission that could bring equality to the polarized worlds.

Unfortunately for fans, prawns weren’t highlighted in the trailer and the producers have yet to confirm if they will be included in the movie at all. I love Matt Damon, but no prawns is a deal-breaker.
